One of the causes is faster wear of joint cartilage than its renewal. When the cartilage wears out, the joint becomes painful, which causes difficulties in movement.
Symptoms of Mobility Issues
The first sign of joint disease in your cat is a change in lifestyle – reluctance to jump up or down, increased sleepiness, difficulties going up or down stairs, problems using the litter box, and decreased interest in grooming.
What Causes Joint Problems in Cats?
- Age
Although joint problems can also occur in young cats, they are significantly more common in older animals. This is due to age-related changes in joint cartilage. - Breed and Genetics
Some cat breeds are more likely to suffer from joint problems due to predispositions to abnormal or defective development, known as dysplasia. Persian, Siamese, and Himalayan cats are predisposed to developing dysplasia. - Overweight
Overweight and obese cats may suffer from joint issues more often, as their joints are exposed to greater stress. - Accidents and Trauma
Cats are agile animals that love to climb and jump. With increasing age, the stress on their joints results in cartilage wear. Other causes may include car accidents or other physical injuries. - Other Factors
Other contributing factors to joint diseases in cats include joint inflammation and infections, as well as bone fractures affecting the joint space.
Recommendations
In some cases of mobility problems, a veterinarian may prescribe appropriate medication. Nowadays, there are also special diets available for animals with joint disease. These diets contain ingredients that help nourish and protect joint cartilage. Such diets can be obtained from your veterinarian.
