Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is very common in older dogs and cats and is one of the most prevalent kidney diseases in geriatric patients. CKD is diagnosed when there is functional or structural damage to the kidneys for more than three months.

Most patients with CKD suffer from structural and functional loss. However, these changes are not always obvious and controlling pre-renal and postrenal causes can have a very positive impact on disease management. The progressive nature of CKD requires careful clinical monitoring, adapting and adjusting treatment as needed.

It is essential to control aspects of the disease such as proteinuria, hyperphosphatemia, hypertension, uremia and inflammatory processes leading to fibrosis.
