This disease cannot be cured and requires daily care to control the various symptoms that cause the horse discomfort. Regular and careful veterinary monitoring is essential and treatment with pergolide may be given. What is happening in the horse's body?
In horses affected by Cushing's disease, dopamine, which normally regulates the production of other hormones, is not produced sufficiently. As a result of the loss of this regulatory function, there is an excessive release of hormones such as ACTH.
These hormones have different roles in the body and their imbalance leads to the development of clinical symptoms that cause discomfort to the horse, such as:
- Hirsutism (excessive hair growth),
- laminitis,
- loss of muscle mass,
- apathy and reduced vitality, etc.
Promoting dopamine production and regulating the secretion of hormones such as ACTH helps to restore comfort and improve the horse's quality of life.
